Grandmother School

“Offers its readers a poignantly lively picture book that expressly reveals the power and freedom found in words for women across the world. How great a treat it will be to read this book in a grandmother’s lap. Highly Recommended.” ― CM: Canadian Review of Materials

Winner of the 2021 Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize

I fell in love at first read with Rina’s manuscript. It is so sweet and heartfelt. A little girl tells us proudly about her grandmother who goes to a special school created just for grandmothers. This sweet tale of family bonds and community life is based on a real school in India where the grandmothers are finally getting a chance to do what they missed out on when they were children: learn to read, write, and do basic math.

Grandmother School is the recipient of the 2021 Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize (BC and Yukon Book Prizes), a Forest of Reading Blue Spruce Award nominee, an Ontario Libraries Association Best Bet, and a CBC Books selection for best Canadian picture books of 2020. It was also a starred selection in the Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s Best Books for Kids and Teens Fall 2020 edition.
